COs for Seniors
Free Carbon Monoxide Detector Program
The Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department EMS Division, in partnership with the Firefighters Charitable Foundation, is proud to announce the launch of “COs for Seniors.”
This program offers free carbon monoxide detectors in an effort to safeguard residents from the “silent killer.”
Friendswood EMS will evaluate the home, assess carbon monoxide needs and install detectors if deemed necessary.
This will be done free of charge to residents enrolled in the program.
Unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning is responsible for more than 350 deaths per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and can cause severe illness—especially in susceptible populations, such as infants and the elderly.
Incidents are most frequent during winter months, when home heating is more prevalent. However, portable generators used by Friendswood residents during weather emergencies are a common cause of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that starves the body of oxygen, silently suffocating its unaware victims. Inhalation can cause loss-of-consciousness, rendering victims unable to escape to safety.
In its early stages, lower levels of carbon monoxide can cause headaches, dizziness and flu-like symptoms; prolonged exposure can be fatal.
High levels of CO can be deadly within two hours.
CO detectors, which look similar to smoke detectors, alert residents if carbon monoxide is detected in the home.
